Artwork Commission (Paul Baileys - Assistant Principle)

This project was given to the group as a collaborative piece, which was to go in the Assistant Principle of North Notts College's office. He wanted a splatter style painting, so we looked into the work of Jackson Pollock, which became our main influence. We worked in a range of colours, some we tried to keep matching and others we went crazy with completely random colours. We tried many different splatter styles/effects and ended up agreeing on long thin spatters and large round ones. We made a few practice sheets as the canvas we were given to work with was 40'' x 60''.
These are the two we liked the most (seen below). In the end we used the colours seen on the first image below, which were; White, Black, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Dark Red, Light Red and Bright Green as we felt these colours went well and believed this was the best 'test' one we tried.

This is another of my favourites, I think the colours go well together with the exemption of the Bright Green. However, this attempt was far to dark/dull for the room its being placed in.

Here you can see the procedure we went through whilst creating our final piece

I did this in the space of about 10 minutes just using the liquify tool and the clone stamp tool. This is mocking Leonardo De Caprio on the size of his forehead. This was a very quick edit, so of course there are many mistakes/un-natural sections of his forehead. These won't occur later in my actual pieces.

Animation in 1950's

1940-1960 was known as the Golden Age of Animation in America

Disney became more prominent in the 1950's with A-list Animated movies like:

  • Cinderella - 1950
  • Alice In Wonderland - 1951
  • Peter Pan - 1953
  • Lady & The Tramp - 1955
  • Sleeping Beauty - 1959

Many popular Characters emerged in and around the 1950's, such as; Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Tom & Jerry, Betty Boop, Woody the Woodpecker and the first animation of Superman.

Cinderella facts:

  • The transformation of Cinderella's torn dress to that of the white ball gown was considered to be Walt Disney's favourite piece of animation.
  • Not only is the name of the Prince never revealed, he is nowhere in the film mentioned as "Prince Charming".

How many early Disney animations were made https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhfp6Z8z1cI

''What's Up, Doc?'' was re-released in 1951 (originally released in 1941), which marked the 10th Birthday of Bugs Bunny

In 1958 Warner Bros. releases Knighty Knight Buggs produced by Fritz Freleng, which wins the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.

Looney Tunes started to become more and more popular and ended up being a regular show on Television, the same happened with Tom & Jerry

As Television became more popular, advertisements and commercials appeared on T.V more and more, many of which used animation to show their service/product.

Tortoise Beats Hare was one of the first 'Merrie Melodies/Looney Tunes' which featured Bugs Bunny, it came out in 1941

Other popular animations include:
Speedy Gonzales
Casper The Friendly Ghost
Popeye the Sailor Man
The Road Runner Show
The Woody Woodpecker Show

Racism was a huge issue with Looney Tunes in the 1950's as many of their animations/episodes had massive amounts of racism and/or offensive gestures.

Modernism & Degenerate Art

Kunst = Art (in German)

In between both World Wars, Modernism (1930's) started to rise up until Hitler came in to control and called it ''Degenerate''.

In the 1930's an Art exhibition was held to show off Modernism Art, called ''Degenerate'' to mock the Nazi's opinion on their Art

Hitler ordered the removal of over 70 paintings from a permanent gallery in Weimar

Hitler hated the Art because it was out of the normal and was 'Jewish' in his eyes.

Lots of Art gallery owners were dismissed & fired due to showing Degenerate Art

In 1937, a wide-scale confiscation of over 15,000 pieces of work from 101 German museums were sealed away in a massive depot which were later sold to other countries to fund the German state/the Nazi

Most Artists/Lecturers/Teachers/Scientists/Thinkers & Philosophist fled Germany/went into hiding once Hitler hated their artwork
